I'm Not Good At Math!

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

Early in my HR Career, I shadowed a recruiter. I was new to the Talent Acquisition space and I was learning how to interview a candidate. Together, we went over his resume and by all accounts he should've breezed pass this preliminary screening. He did not.

Now, I am not a sports aficionado, but in football I think you would say he fumbled the ball. He could not answer common questions like, " walk me through your resume," "tell me why you left your last role?" Or even, "How close are you to completing your degree?" To say that this interview was painful would be an understatement. I just remember feeling sad because it could have been so much better. He had the skills, but he could not articulate one complete thought.

After the call, we quickly moved on. However, that experience stayed with me. I wondered how many almost jobs would he only be on the verge of getting. I thought, "I could help him." Truth be told, he just needed practice and guidance on how to tell his story, but I'd only been in Talent acquisition a week at that point- what did I know?

Turns out, I knew a lot more than I gave myself credit for. Years later, I can say that now though that limiting belief kept me doubting myself and stuck for a long time. While I am not good at math, I am good at communicating. It took me years to recognize that as a skill and I don't want the same for you! If you are feeling stuck, or unsure of your skillset, let's chat. Together we can identify your strengths, so you can use them to quiet any limiting belief you may possess and propel you to where you want to go.
